Hexonomica. How to play?

Welcome! Hexonomica is a game that lives on a real-world hex map. Walk outside, open new hexes around you, capture them for your faction, and build structures on the territory you hold.

What you see right after sign-up

Right after registration you get a starter pack: a small reserve of energy, an avatar at your location, and 7 hexes around you that you can interact with. Open the map and tap any of these hexes to begin exploring the area around you.

Three resources you'll meet first

Almost everything in the game revolves around three resources. You'll see them in the side panel on the map:

  • Energy — required to open new hexes. You start with a small reserve; you can charge it by physically moving around the map (see the flywheel) or build solar panels.
  • Materia — the resource you spend to capture a hex for your faction. It comes in two flavours — ice or fire — depending on the faction you chose at sign-up.
  • Coins — the in-game currency you find under hexes, extract from mines, and can earn through the referral program. Spend them in the shop on upgrades and resources.

Factions: Ice vs Fire

When you register you pick one of two factions — Ice or Fire. Your faction defines the lands you'll play on, the type of your materia (fire or ice), and which advanced buildings you can eventually construct.

Three basic actions

Every match is built on the same loop: open new ground, claim it, then develop it.

  1. Discover — spend energy to uncover the next hex around you. Underneath it you can find coins, materia, ore deposits or a building.
  2. Capture — once a hex is yours by discovery, spend a unit of materia to mark it for your faction. Captured hexes passively drop materia and coins.
  3. Build — on your own captured hexes you can construct mines, towers, factories and houses that produce resources, defend your land and grow your rating in the sector.
